And Clarence Thomas.... it was not racist. I have seen "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country" performed live by Mr. Newman on several occasions -- the audience was more than complimentary. Ours is an Empire that is in disarry [to be charitable. Randy Newman is no racist. He never stood on his piano bench and shouted "god damn america". This song in its entirety is a biting and accurate commentary on what Mr. Newman has observed in his ~65 years observing America and the World.
