…and black people, but try not to act too surprised. President Bush has been given his fair share of scrutiny by the left over appointments. The whole Harrient Miers fiasco didn’t work out as well as he would have hoped, although it stands to reason that it all worked out in the end. In 2005, a few of his judicial appointments nearly created a Constitutional crisis, but fortunately the Gang of 14 was there to save him.

President Bush gets this criticism not because everyone hates him (although that is a contributing factor,) but because he often makes TERRIBLE appointments. His latest poor decision was directed towards the medical field- he appointed Dr. James Holsinger to the position of Surgeon General. The problem with Dr. Holsinger is that he is a bit of a bigot. Holsinger has made it clear that he is more than just disinclined to engage in an alternative lifestyle, but he takes his dislike much farther. He wrote a paper in 1991 for the United Methodist Church. Here is the ’science’:

Four general groups of conditions may be encountered in homosexually active men: classical sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, infections with chlamydia trachomatis, syphilis, herpes simplex infections, genital warts, pubic lice, scabies); enteric diseases (infections with hig gel la species, Campylobacter jejuni, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis non-A, non-B, and cytomegalovirus); trauma (fecal incontinence, hemorrhoids, anal fissure, foreign bodies, rectosigmoid tears, allergic proctitis, penile edema, chemical sinusitis, inhaled nitrite burns, and sexual assault of the male patient); and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)” (Owen, 1985) .

‘Inhaled nitrite burns? I’m not sure where recreational drugs play into the mix, but the Holsinger ends with this quip:

Therefore, based on the simplest known anatomy and physiology, when dealing with the complementarity of the human sexes, one can simply say, Res ipsa loquitur - the thing speaks for itself!

Colbert weighed in on the issue:

President Bush isn’t a big fan of the homosexual lifestyle and we all know that Papa Bush doesn’t care about what other people think, but this appointment is also a poor decision politically. With his time in office nearly over, President Bush needs to pick his battles more wisely. Appoint a consensus Surgeon General and maybe he can get something that he wants more?
