Don Imus is stupid. Very stupid. There is little doubt in my mind that he wouldn’t have said what he said, knowing the hailstorm that ensued after he called the Rutger’s Women’s Basketball team a number of wildly offensive phrases. Its also a little unnerving that some of our nation’s leaders are huge fans of “the I-man”. Now that this firestorm is (somewhat) over, lets take a look at the Constitutional implications of Mr. Imus’s inane comments.

Most rational individuals have fled from the Imus scandal as fast as possible, but a select group of arch-conservatives (and Redstate) have rallied behind Imus, defending him as a man who may have made a minor mistake. Don Imus most definitely has the right to say what he said and CBS most definitely has the right to fire him for saying it. Most of the rhetoric has been focused on the general loss of free speech that could ensue, now that he has been let go by CBS. More likely than not, radio shock jocks will simply have to watch what they say for a while until the entire country settles down a bit. One of those hosts will forget Mr. Imus’s mistake and say something he or she shouldn’t have, and the whole process will start again.
